AACE-CEP Exam – Frequently Asked Questions

You need either 8 years of relevant industry experience, or 4 years of experience plus a 4-year relevant degree. You must also agree to AACE’s code of ethics.

The exam application fee is US$500 for AACE members and US$625 for non-members. All fees are non-refundable.

The resit fee is US$250 for both members and non-members.

You may retake the exam up to three times within your registration period, paying the applicable resit fee each time.

The exam is conducted as a computer-based test at designated testing centers, or via online proctoring if your system meets the requirements.

The exam lasts up to 5 hours, with 119 multiple-choice questions (simple and scenario-based) plus one memo writing assignment. It is closed-book, and calculators are permitted.

You must achieve a minimum overall average score of 70% across all domains to pass.

The CEP certification is valid for three years.

If you fail to renew before the expiry date, your certification will lapse and you will need to reapply as a new candidate.

CEP holders demonstrate strong expertise in project cost estimation, budgeting, value engineering, and the ability to communicate estimates effectively to stakeholders—key skills for project success.

CCP (Certified Cost Professional): Focuses on cost management, cost control, project controls, and total cost management across the project lifecycle.

CEP (Certified Estimating Professional): Specializes in cost estimation, budgeting, forecasting, and developing reliable cost estimates at various project stages.
In short, CCP covers the broader discipline of cost management, while CEP is more specialized in estimation.
